17th BRICS Summit opens in Rio with a warning on global trade

On Sunday (July 6), the BRICS leaders summit in Rio de Janeiro. In his opening speech, Brazilian President Lula said.

BRICS is the heir to the Non-Aligned Movement. With multilateralism under attack, our autonomy is in check once again.

In a joint statement released later that day, BRICS leaders warned that the rise in tariffs is threatening global trade, a clear, if indirect, criticism of Trump-era tariff policies.

Just hours later, Trump warned he would punish countries looking to join the bloc with extra 10% tariff.

About BRICS

Originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining later, BRICS has recently expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia.

Many analysts believe this expansion has increased BRICS potential international influence. Today, BRICS countries represent nearly half of the worlds population and 40% of global GDP.
